Materials

At Ela C Designs, we pride ourselves in the quality of stones, metals and other natural materials we use. Because we source natural materials, they can vary at times in color, clarity, shape and size. Below is a list of the primary materials and metals we use, and proper care instructions.

  • Semi precious stones and Freshwater Pearls

We use semi-precious and natural stones and do our best to utilize stones that fit the overall size, scale and quality of the finished design.  Our gemstones are natural, and should be lightly cleaned of body oils and debris with mild soap and warm water applied directly to the stone.

  • Czech Glass

Our Czech glass components are high quality beads and components manufactured in the Czech Republic, which has been known for hundreds of years for its quality of glass designs.  Because they are glass, they should be lightly cleaned of body oils and debris with mild soap and warm water applied directly to the bead.

  • Fine Silver
    • Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver. In this form the metal is beautiful and suffers from minimal tarnish, but it’s generally also softer. When fine silver is alloyed with copper it creates sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper.
  • Sterling Silver and Silver Plated
  • Gold Filled and Gold Plated
  • Vermeil
  • Bronze
  • Copper
  • Matte Brass (including Antique Brass)

General cleaning and care guidelines

We suggest you keep your jewelry in airtight jewelry boxes or zip-lock plastic bags if possible to decrease oxidation of metals. Please keep in a cool, dry place. Do not wear your jewelry in water or at the pool.

Due to the many different stones in our jewelry, we do not recommend using harsh cleaners on your jewelry or ‘dipping’ your jewelry in a solution.

We suggest you use a polishing cloth to polish your sterling silver items. You should not use polishing cloths on the matte brass items as this could cause the plated external layer to eventually wear off.

Your jewelry will last much longer if you keep it away from any substance that’s not pH-neutral. So apply your makeup, hairspray, lotion, sunscreen, and perfume first (hopefully not all at once or it’ll smell awful) and let the products sink in, then put on your jewelry for the day.

Specific Leather Care :

Leather is typically quite durable and develops a nice worn-in look as it ages. Just make sure to keep it away from household chemical products, and never immerse it in liquid. This means you should avoid wearing your leather jewelry to the beach or the gym, and be careful when washing your hands.

Specific Metal Care :

Sterling silver oxidizes upon contact with air, so it will inevitably tarnish over time. You can slow down the process by keeping your silver jewelry in an airtight bag or container. A zip-lock bag will do nicely. If your jewelry starts to look a little dull, wipe it down with a polishing cloth. We will provide a small ziplock bag and polishing cloth with your order with us.

Stainless steel is easy to look after because it doesn’t corrode or oxidize, and it won’t break if you drop it. However, it can get scratched, so make sure you always store your jewelry in separate containers or pouches. If your stainless steel jewelry needs cleaning, you can often just rinse it under running water.

Specific Stone Care :

  • Green Opal – not recommended to be left out in the sun, as the sun can dry out the stone and ultimately cause it to break
  • Natural crystals include amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and tourmaline. Crystals are generally durable, but can still break or get worn away by harsh soap and scrubbing, so make sure you treat them gently. Start by wiping your crystal with a soft cloth dipped in warm water. If that doesn’t restore its shininess, you can use a more thorough cleaning method. But before you do, please check whether your crystal is porous or non-porous.
  • Non-porous stones include aquamarine, cubic zirconia, garnet, and topaz, all of which can safely be soaked in a mixture of warm water and mild detergent, then rinsed off under a running tap.
  • Porous stones include jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and tiger’s eye, turquoise. Porous stones absorb any liquid they come into contact with, so never soak them in water, and avoid household chemicals because they will cause stains and discoloration. Simply wipe them with a clean damp cloth when they need it, then dry them off thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
